Palo Alto, California, 1912 to 1996. Two Stanford engineering graduates with five hundred and thirty-eight dollars between them start a company in a rented garage and a shed, and their first real customer is Walt Disney. Over the next forty years they build something stranger than an instrument business: a company with no time clocks, no locked stockroom, no private offices and no layoffs, run on a written set of objectives and on the habit of walking to a bench and asking what the person at it is doing. The rules they wrote down became the most copied management document in American industry and the least understood. This is an account of what the arrangement was, what it cost, where it failed, and why it did not survive imitation. Covers David Packard, William Hewlett, and Hewlett-Packard.
