Paris, Getaria and Granville, 1910 to 1972. Three people cut cloth for the same body and could not agree what the body was. Gabrielle Chanel takes the structure out and asks the garment to permit movement. Christian Dior puts the structure back, inside, and builds a shape the body underneath does not have. Cristóbal Balenciaga, alone among them a trained tailor who could make the whole garment himself, cuts the sleeve so that the shoulder stays free while the cloth stands away. Each argument is made in seams, grain and padding rather than in sentences, and each is argued daily with a head of workroom who must build it and a licensing department that must sell it. Covers Gabrielle Chanel, Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, and Balenciaga.
