Chicago and the American office market, 1941 to 2007. Sam Zell is born to Polish refugees who got out in 1939, learns in Ann Arbor that a building is a stream of rents attached to a piece of paper, and spends forty years buying property from people who had to sell. He names the practice himself, in a trade journal in the late 1970s, and the name sticks. Along the way he helps convert American real estate from a private, illiquid, tax-driven trade into a publicly traded asset class, and in February 2007 he sells the largest office company in the country for thirty-nine billion dollars, weeks before the credit that paid for it stops existing. Covers Sam Zell, Robert Lurie, and Equity Group Investments.
