Upper Franconia, 1900 to 1978. Two brothers begin making sports shoes in their mother's washhouse in a small Bavarian town that already lived by leather, and build a firm that shoes the fastest men in the world. Then, in 1948, they divide it. Rudolf takes half the workforce across the river and calls his company one thing; Adolf keeps the factory and calls his another. For the next thirty years the town has two payrolls, two soccer clubs, two bakeries, and a rule about which shoes a man's neighbors will see him in. What the quarrel was actually about has never been established, and this is an account of the evidence rather than of the anecdote. Covers Adolf Dassler, Rudolf Dassler, Adidas, and Puma.
