Portland and Kobe, 1962 to 1974. A Stanford business student writes a term paper arguing that Japanese running shoes could do to the Germans what Japanese cameras did to the Germans, then flies to Japan and tells a company in Kobe that he represents an importer that does not exist. For seven years Blue Ribbon Sports sells another firm's shoes under another firm's name, out of a car trunk and a basement, on borrowed money, with the whole business resting on a distribution agreement that is renegotiated every few years and can be ended at will. The record of those years is mostly letters. This is an account of what the letters say, what the court found, and where the two diverge. Covers Philip Hampson Knight, Bill Bowerman, Jeff Johnson, Kihachiro Onitsuka, Blue Ribbon Sports, and Onitsuka Company.
