Read it:
Oregon and the world, 1971 to 1999. A Portland importer loses its Japanese supplier, invents a brand name in a week, buys a logo for thirty-five dollars, and spends the next three decades discovering that the profitable part of a running shoe is not the shoe. Phil Knight's company learns to pay athletes to be seen in its product, then to pay agencies to make the seeing mean something, then to move its manufacturing to countries whose wages it does not set and whose factories it does not own. By 1997 it sells nine billion dollars of footwear a year and manufactures none of it. Then the accounting arrives from Indonesia and Vietnam, and Knight stands up in Washington and concedes the sentence his own marketing had made possible. Covers Phil Knight and Nike.
