Read it:
Eugene, Oregon, 1911 to 1999. A track coach who was never much of a runner takes over a program in a wet valley town and decides that the thing limiting his athletes is not their training but what is under their feet. For twenty years he cuts shoes apart on a bench under the grandstand at Hayward Field, glues them back together lighter, and gives them to one man at a time to run in. In 1970 or 1971 — no source agrees — he pours liquid urethane into a waffle iron in his own kitchen and takes out a sheet of rubber studs. The patent is in his name, the company that sells it is not his alone, and what he actually invented is argued about still. Covers Bill Bowerman and University of Oregon.
