Galicia, 1936 to 2013. A railway worker's son leaves school at thirteen to run errands for a shirtmaker in La Coruña, and by the time he is done the world's clothing industry has been reorganized around a question nobody in it had thought to ask: why must a garment be designed eight months before anybody can buy it? Amancio Ortega built quilted bathrobes in a front room, then a shop, then a chain, then a factory system that could put a new design in a store window in about two weeks. What he made obsolete was not last year's coat. It was the season itself, and the calendar of orders, samples and commitments that the whole trade had been built on since the nineteenth century. Covers Amancio Ortega and Zara.
