Read it:
The Bronx and Mill Valley, 1939 to 1997. A tie salesman born Ralph Lifshitz builds an American fashion house out of an English country weekend he had only seen in films, and two San Francisco newspaper people buy a heap of Spanish army surplus and sell it as the wardrobe of an expedition that never went anywhere. Neither business began with a garment. Each began with a world, a set of rooms and a climate and an imagined family and a past nobody in it had lived, and the clothes were the admission price. Between them they found the fact the trade spent thirty years learning: a merchant who sells a season sells twice a year, and a merchant who sells a world sells all year, at full price. Covers Ralph Lauren, Mel Ziegler, Patricia Ziegler, Polo, and Banana Republic.
