San Francisco and Southern California, 1829 to 2004. A Bavarian dry-goods merchant supplies the country stores of the mining West and does not invent the garment he is remembered for. A tailor in Reno, born in Riga, does, and cannot raise the sixty-eight dollars the application costs, so he writes to his cloth supplier and offers him half. In 1873 the two of them patent a copper rivet at the corner of a pocket. Ninety-three years later, a shoemaker opens a factory in Anaheim with a store attached and sells a canvas deck shoe to whoever walks in the door. Two businesses built on the same refusal: a garment sold by number rather than by name, made to outlast the season that was supposed to replace it. Covers Levi Strauss, Jacob Davis, Paul Van Doren, Levi Strauss & Co., and Van Doren Rubber Company.
