Paris, 1919 to 1972. Three couture houses are built on one contradiction: the garments that make the name lose money, and the name is then rented out to pay for them. Gabrielle Chanel signs away her perfume in 1924 and spends the next quarter century trying to get it back. Christian Dior opens in 1947 on a cotton magnate's money, is dead within eleven years, and leaves behind the licensing machine that outlives him. Cristóbal Balenciaga refuses most of it, cuts better than either, and shuts his doors in 1968 rather than adapt. What the three are arguing about, without ever putting it this way, is whether a couture house is a workroom or a trademark. Covers Gabrielle Chanel, Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, and Balenciaga.
