Burlington, Vermont, 1978 to 2000. Two friends from Merrick, Long Island, take a five-dollar correspondence course in ice cream making, rent a derelict gas station, and start selling cones to college students in a state whose winters are the worst possible conditions for the trade. What they build over the next twenty-two years is not a brand but a factory: a cooperative creamery's milk turned into a high-butterfat, low-overrun product loaded with pieces so large that the machinery has to be rebuilt around them, sold through a distribution system a much larger competitor tried to close. This is the account of the plant, the milk that fed it, and a manufacturer that wrote itself a constitution. Covers Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.
