Read it:
Palo Alto, 1930 to 1947. A university with more land than money, a professor who could not place his best students, and two of those students who had to leave California to find work. Frederick Terman read an article about a bridge circuit, handed the idea to William Hewlett, and said there might be a business in it. Hewlett put a light bulb in the feedback loop. David Packard took leave from General Electric for fifty-five dollars a month. On the first day of 1939 the two men put five hundred and thirty-eight dollars into a joint account and tossed a coin for the order of their names. Eight years later the partnership became a corporation, and the land across the road was still empty. Covers Frederick Terman, William Hewlett, David Packard, Hewlett-Packard, and Stanford University.
