Santa Clara County, 1968 to 1985. Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore leave the division they built and incorporate another company on a page and a half of typing; Arthur Rock raises two and a half million dollars against it almost immediately. Andy Grove, who got out of Hungary in 1956, arrives to make the place run. They set out to sell semiconductor memory, and they succeed: the 1103 ends the reign of magnetic core. Along the way a side contract for a Japanese calculator firm produces a general-purpose processor nobody ordered and nobody at first wanted to sell. Seventeen years later the memory business is taken from them by Japanese manufacturers, and on one day in October they announce they are done with it.
