Santa Clara County, 1957 to 1986. Eight men walk out of a laboratory and find that California will not enforce the promise their employer thought he had. The reason is a sentence a New York lawyer drafted in 1865 and California adopted without discussion in 1872. Over the next thirty years that accident turns leaving into a local norm, and three other things are built on top of it: a partnership form borrowed from wildcat oil drilling, a share of company ownership handed to people who would never have received one in Syosset or Poughkeepsie, and two federal rule changes in 1978 and 1979 that released more money into the arrangement than anyone had asked for. None of it was designed. All of it was exported. Covers Jean Hoerni; Jay Last; David Allison; Lionel Kattner; Charles Sporck; Robert Noyce; Gordon Moore; Jerry Sanders; Fairchild Semiconductor; Amelco; Signetics; National Semiconductor; Intel; Advanced Micro Devices; and Hayden, Stone.
