Murray Hill and Mountain View, 1945 to 1957. William Shockley ran the Bell Telephone Laboratories group that made the transistor, was left off the patent, and spent a month at a hotel desk and a kitchen table inventing a better one. Eight years later he took it west to a former apricot shed on South San Antonio Road, hired the best young physicists and chemists in America, and within eighteen months built a laboratory none of them could work in. He posted their salaries, ranked them against one another, demanded polygraph tests over a cut thumb, and turned the work off the silicon transistor and onto a four-layer diode. In September 1957 eight of them resigned together, and the industry that followed was built by the ones who left. Covers William Shockley, Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, Jay Last, Jean Hoerni, Eugene Kleiner, Julius Blank, Victor Grinich, Sheldon Roberts, and Bell Labs.
