Palo Alto, 1947 to 1970. A newly incorporated company of a hundred and eleven people, smaller than it had been during the war, spends twenty-three years turning a set of shop-floor habits into a written philosophy, and a hundred and eleven people into sixteen thousand. It takes forty acres of land a university was forbidden to sell, hands out bonus checks by hand, writes six objectives at a country inn in Sonoma, sells sixteen-dollar shares to its own machinists, and in a recession cuts every paycheck by a tenth rather than cut anybody. Almost every practice later called the culture of Silicon Valley was first written down here, by two engineers making it up as they went, who did not know they were founding anything at all. Covers William Hewlett, David Packard, and Hewlett-Packard.
