Northwest Arkansas, 1945 to 1992. A former J.C. Penney trainee buys a failing variety store in Newport, Arkansas, loses its lease five years later, and starts again on a square in Bentonville. What he builds from there is not a chain of stores so much as a machine for moving goods to towns nobody else would drive to: hub-and-spoke warehouses, a private truck fleet, a satellite dish on a rooftop, and a Saturday morning meeting where something noticed on a shelf on Thursday becomes a decision before Monday. A shopper could see the strategy from inside the store — the shelf height, the aisle width, the number on the tag. This is an account of the system standing behind that number, and of what it cost and to whom. Covers Sam Walton and Walmart.
