Omaha, Nebraska, across a century. A woman born in a Jewish village near Minsk arrives in America in 1917 with no English, no schooling and no money, and in 1937 opens a furniture store in a basement with five hundred dollars. She sells at a markup so thin that the manufacturers refuse to supply her, and when a customer doubts the price she shows the invoice. She is sued for selling too cheap and wins, is bought out by Berkshire Hathaway on a handshake in 1983, and is still on the floor of the largest home furnishings store in the country at a hundred. This is an account of a slogan that was kept, and of the arithmetic underneath it. Covers Rose Blumkin and Nebraska Furniture Mart.
