Read it:
San Diego, 1954 to 1994. A lawyer with no retail experience opens a store in a leased building for federal employees who pay two dollars to be allowed in, and discovers that the fee is the product. Sol Price spends forty years removing things — carpet, shelving, bags, advertising, salesmen, the free run of the door — until what is left is a concrete box with a ceiling on markup written into it. He builds it twice, loses the first one to the man he sold half of it to, and sells the second to a company founded by his own former stock boy. The argument he leaves behind is that a merchant's restraint cannot be trusted, so it must be built into the walls. Covers Sol Price, Jim Sinegal, FedMart, Price Club, and Costco.
