Read it:
London, Paris and the Swiss valleys, 1850 to 1918. A herdsman's son from the Valais learns hotel keeping in the season towns of the Alps and the Riviera, and in 1890 is handed the management of a new London hotel that Richard D'Oyly Carte has built with the money the Gilbert and Sullivan operas made him. The Savoy has electric light, lifts, and bathrooms in a city where a private bathroom is an extravagance. César Ritz fills it by changing who may be seen eating in public. Eight years later the company's own investigators go through the books and the board removes him in a morning. Ten weeks after that he opens a hotel in the Place Vendôme with his own name over the door. Covers César Ritz, Auguste Escoffier, Richard D'Oyly Carte, and The Savoy.
