Fresno and Las Vegas, 1917 to 1993. An Armenian immigrants' son who left school in the eighth grade and learned to fly by trading barn work for lessons ferries bombers over the North Atlantic, sells a charter airline, and buys eighty acres of Nevada scrub across from the Flamingo. On that desert he builds the largest hotel in the world, and then does it twice more. Each time the room is the cheapest thing in the building and the room is not the product. The rate card goes below cost on purpose, because the money is made on a floor where the arithmetic cannot lose. Then, on a November morning in 1980, eighty-five people die in the building that proved it. Covers Kirk Kerkorian and MGM Grand.
