New Mexico, Texas, Chicago and New York, 1887 to 1979. A storekeeper's son who grew up putting travelers into rooms behind his father's counter works out the thing that governs the whole trade: a night that goes unsold is gone, and a hotel that cannot sell its nights cannot pay the mortgage that built it. That makes hotels cheapest at the moment they are hardest to run. Conrad Hilton spends the 1930s inside that arithmetic as a debtor and the 1940s outside it as a buyer, assembling a chain out of other men's foreclosures, and in October 1949 takes a lease on the most famous hotel in the world without buying the building underneath it. In 1954 he buys the Statler chain for a hundred and eleven million dollars. Covers Conrad Hilton and Statler chain.
