Florida, 1878 to 1913. Henry Flagler arrives in St. Augustine a rich man with nothing left to do and finds a state with no roads, no season, and almost nobody in it. So he builds the demand. He lays rail down three hundred miles of sand and puts a hotel at the end of every stretch of it, each one worthless without the other, until a swamp becomes Palm Beach and a mangrove bank becomes Miami. Then he runs the line a hundred and thirty miles across open ocean to Key West. The night he is selling cannot be stored, the train that carries the buyer cannot run empty, and the men who built both were not all counted. Covers Henry Flagler, Hotel Ponce de León, and Royal Poinciana.
