Michigan and Chicago, 1866 to 1932. A boy carries handbills to sixty-five houses for two dollars a round, undercut by boys who will do it for a dollar fifty, and asks the advertisers to compare the results. Forty years later he is the best-paid writer of advertisements alive, keying every coupon on a toothpaste and telling the trade that selling has become a science. In between he makes a fortune out of a germicide that a laboratory finds to be dilute acid, and never mentions it again in print. The tests were real. The records were his own, kept by the man they enriched, and almost none of them survive anywhere a stranger can look. This is an account of what a coupon could count and what it could not. Covers Claude Clarence Hopkins, Albert Lasker, Liquozone, and Lord and Thomas.
