Read it:
Britain and the United States, 1911 to 1958. A bankrupt stockbroker's son fails at Oxford, cooks in Paris, and spends three winters selling cast-iron cookers at the back doors of Scottish houses. He writes a sales manual, gets a job in a London agency on his brother's say-so, and talks his way to America, where George Gallup teaches him to count. Twelve years later he opens a New York agency with borrowed British money and no American credentials, and sells shirts, tonic water and an island by asking people questions first. The account he later published of all this is charming, funny, and wrong in places that can be checked. This is what the record holds instead. Covers David Mackenzie Ogilvy.
